8:30 am - Comparing Bodily Waste from Cows and People:  the misinformation, the correction and what do we do now?
In the factual background section of a 2017 lawsuit challenging NYS CAFO regulations, the plaintiffs claimed that a 200 cow dairy produces as much waste as a city of 96,000 people. Using the CNCPS and published literature, Mike and  Karl ran the numbers based on total excretion as well as N and P. Their calculations show the lawsuit “fact” is more than ten times too high.  After providing brief background and discussion of the calculations, the session will focus on discussion of the surrounding issues and improving our understanding of non-farm perceptions.
Mike Van Amburgh, PhD, Animal Science and Karl Czymmek, PRO-DAIRY Program.
